Yaki Brown Chilli

The taste and spice of chili peppers is an addictive and beloved flavor worldwide, and people are always impressed by gardeners who have extremely spicy chillies in their collection. In most commercial markets, super spicy chilis are considered novelty and speciality items and thus are hard to find, or overpriced. Lesser known varieties like yaki brown are in fact impossible to find in most indian markets. In contrast a single plant of this variety can produce at least 60-70 pepper per plant per season, and can continue producing for many years if conditions are right.

The deep purple stems and unripe fruit of this variety are very aesthetically appealing. They look almost like little lanterns hanging on this plant. As the fruits begin to ripen, the visual appeal only increases as shades of red start getting mixed in.

Super spicy peppers are extremely trendy in the age of the internet. People who barely know about cultivars and heirlooms are often still up to date with the current hottest chili varieties and the scoville units ranking system. Curiosity is the bigest selling point for these peppers, that and the intrinsically addictive nature of spice (some people literally can't get enough, no matter how much it hurts!)

Yaki brown chillis have an exceptional shelf life, and last many days outside the refrigerator (possibly a few months if stored correctly.) To extend the shelf life even further, they can be sun dried and sold in the form of powder or flakes. They can be blended with garlic, herbs and other flavors to make unique seasoning blends. Fermented and non-fermented hot sauces are always best sellers at markets, especially when the names Bhut Jolokhia. Additionallythere may be potential for pepper sprays for self defense, garden pest repellent sprays and even pain-relief balms (not sure how, but capsaicin is a common ingredient in many pain-relief medication, an provides both heating and numbing properties )

Pepper plants produce many flowers over a long season that are a source of nectar for bees and other pollinators. 

Boiling super spicy peppers, like yaki brown, in water yields a strong concoction that can be appropriately diluted and sprayed on plants to repel large pests, like deer, rabbits and buffalo. Using this method is extremely cost effective (just a few plants can produce enough chillies to protect several acres of crops). Birds however, do not produce the same response to chillies as us mammals, and are natural consumers and seed distributors for chilli peppers. Although we have not encountered many issues with birds eating our crop, it is a possibility, but in return you may find more pepper plants growing all around, as their seeds get scattered by them.

As a potential perennial crop, chillies can reduce the need for soil disturbance and provide a healthy refuge for soil microbes. Heavy pruning on chillies during the off season (extreme heat or cold) can trigger new flushes of healthy growth the following season. Because the root system of the plant is already established, a larger yield of peppers can be expected in successive seasons and years.
