Considered one of the healthiest bean varieties, the dark blue/black skin of this variety is packed full of antioxidants. Can be used in place of rajma, cooked and added to salads and sabzis, make into black bean burger patties, black bean hummus and of course eaten in tradition Mexican preparations like tacos.
 
This variety is a bush bean variety, but occasionally plants will sent out vines that can grow onto any provided support and increase the yields. The tender green beans can also be eaten, as well as the shelled more mature beans.
