Hopi Purple Corn

As a semi-dwarf corn variety, hopi purple corn is well suited for cultivation in gardens, grow bags and containers. Because of it’s compact size it does not shade out other plants, which is a life saver in smaller growing spaces. The bright pinkish-purple heads of corn are a real show stopper in gardens and the colorful kernels are sometimes placed in decorative bowls to decorate living spaces. 

The kernels of hopi purple corn have a much richer taste than other varieties of corn owing to its higher protein content. A rich umami flavor is imparted to the flour produced by this corn which makes it desirable for chefs in restaurants and homes alike. The bright purple color of the flour also contributes to its visual appeal. Heirloom corn in general is superior in terms of taste and nutrition when compared to regular corn and thus can fetch higher rates. 

The dried stalks of this variety are loved by livestock, alternatively they can be used as mulch for other crops and will protect the soil as it naturally breaks down and returns nutrients to the soil.

As a drought tolerant variety of corn, it can be grown in the dry season without overexploiting water sources like groundwater aquifers and reservoirs. Its deep root system can access reserves of water deep in the soil and the plant is also prone to collecting dewdrop early in the morning, which are funneled down to its base. Because of its deep root system, hopi corn can access nutrients that are in deeper soil layers, thus requires less supplemental nutrition and fertilization. Composting the remains of this crop can effectively make those nutrients available for future crops as well.

The extensive root system of this variety makes it tolerant to harsh winds and even drought conditions. The vast network of roots adds large quantities of organic matter in the soil over the growing season. The roots also secrete liquid carbon during the growing season which can help the soil microbiome (beneficial soil bacteria and fungi) flourish. After the growing season the roots decompose and produce natural water and air channels in soils. In this effect, it can be used to help transition to no tillage systems.
