Desi roselle, aka. Ambadi/ Gongura, is a multi-use, Desi variety of Roselle. Primarily grown as a leafy green, the tangy leaves of this plant are used in pickled, dals, salads and subzis, imparting a deliciously lemony, fresh taste. They are rich in vitamins and minerals and very sustainable to grow as they need less water and fertilization. The Sepals (aka the roselle "fruits") are another useful part of the lant, used to make teas, jams, chutneys, etc. They size of the fruits are smaller than thai roselle and are a more pink color, but they have an equally delicious flavor, and are produced extremely abundantly. The dried seeds are also used as an oil-seed, especially in tribal communities. The planting season for this crop is Mid-Late summer (when water is available) and early monsoon if completely rain-fed. Planting them earlier leads to a greater harvest eventually, once flowering starts in late-monsoon/ winter.
