Little winter melon is an heirloom variety of Wax gourd/ Ash gourd from Italy. The unique feature of this variety is the compact size of the fruits as well as the very thick layer of natural wax produced on them. This thick layer of natural wax helps the gourd stay fresh for several months on the vine, or at room temperature after harvest. No doubt, this served as a valuable feature during the colder winter months, when fresh produce was hard or impossible to come by.  In India unripe wax gourd is much more commonly available since it can be harvested quickly and sold, but this prevents the fruits from having the same nutritional and storage qualities that fully-ripened heirloom varieties like these have.
