A rare, powerful and super medicinal desi variety of ginger from northeast india. This variety has an intense aroma, but also a more complex and delicious flavor profile compared to the regular ginger available in markets. Ing makhir ginger has a lovely warmth, a naturally sweet aroma and taste and a lingering but not overpowering ginger flavor. Its true specialty however, lies in its amazing medicinal properties. Significantly higher levels of gingerol and zingebrene (the compounds that cause the distinct flavor and smell of ginger) give this heirloom variety excellent antioxidant, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory health benefits. This is one of the few heirloom ginger varieties still in cultivation in India, most others were long abandoned for their smaller rhizome sizes and lower yields. However the fact ing makhir ginger is still around is a testament to its unbeatable flavor and health benefits, and to the knowledge of the indigenous communities who recognize its value till today!

Ing Makhir ginger it is fairly easy to grow, and requires the same conditions as regular Ginger plants. Planting season begins in Late march and continues till June. Planting any later can result in very low harvests as the plants naturally stop growing in mid-winter (or earlier as per local temperatures and water availability.) To plant, simply place one rhizome in a 6-12 inch hole and cover it with soil. Adding compost while planting, and then regularly during the growing season, helps improve plant growth and harvest size. planting on raised beds or mounds can be useful in areas prone to waterlogging, and alternatively, sunken beds can help in regions prone to dry spells. Plants in the ginger and turmeric families prefer containers 12 inches in size for adequate root development.
