We all value beetroot for its deep red color, which has notable health benefits. Betacyanin, a compound found in red beetroots exclusively, is a potent antioxidant with cancer fighting properties. Belonging to the same family as swiss chard, beetroot leaves are delicious and edible, but usually lack this red pigment. However, bull’s blood beetroot is a unique heirloom variety with deep red leaves! With this variety you can enjoy regular harvests of dark red leaves, as well as a sweet and earthy beetroot.
History: Bull’s blood beet is a historic heirloom variety of beetroot that dates back to 1840. It was originally bred by Kees Sahin in the Netherlands, with one of the parent varieties being the Crapaudine, a french heirloom beetroot considered one of the oldest heirloom varieties of beetroot in the world! Despite originally being bred for aesthetic reasons (the dark red leaves look amazing in landscapes), the increased nutritional benefits were a welcome bonus.
