Balsam is a classic, easy-to-grow, hardy garden flower. Flowers profusely in various shades of Red, Pink, Purple and white. The grow upright and take little space, they don't need much care or fertilization, are drought toelrant and if direct sown in the ground, can get several feet tall. Suitable for growing in pots as well.
 
Some cultures consider it an edible as well, but we have not tried it. The leaves, stems, flowers and seeds are all eaten in different ways, and many parts of the plant are used medicinally. But it's best to do your own research before trying an new foods.
