African Horned Melon, (aka. Kiwano melon, Jelly Melon, etc) is a beautiful unique African crop that is a member of the cucumber family. It is a super productive, vigorous and hardy crop which grows even in extreme heat and drought conditions. The fruits ar consumed like cucumbers when raw, but are primarily allowed to ripen and turn yellow/ orange before consumption. When ripe, the inside turns a bright green color, with each seed surrounded in a coating of a green jelly like substance which is consumed (similar to pomegranates). This jelly tastes sweet and slightly sour with notes of banana. It is an extremely healthy and refreshing fruit to consume, especially popular as a breakfast food.Its very rich in minerals and vitamins, and a single fruit contains 13% of the reccomended daily value of iron!
